Gravesend and North Kent Hospital

gravesend hospital oldcrest

Gravesend Hospital in Bath Street had it's origins in a small dispensary, which had been established in 1850 in Milton Road, at the corner of Wellington Street. Several local business people and Lord Darnley helped fund this charitable venture. The need for a hospital was apparent and land donated in Bath Street realised this goal. In 1854 the new dispensary and infirmary were opened, the architect being John Gould. This was the start of the hospital, which by the 1880's was known as the Gravesend Hospital and was run by voluntary contributions.

Another local building that has to a great extent survived with it's original exterior. Of course, the gates and pillars have been taken away at some time. The other entrance in Stuart Road which has been the casualty unit for some time, is a more modern addition.

In 2004, this hospital was demolished ready for a new community hospital, I will be adding pictures of the progress and the finished complex on this web site as soon as possible, So please check back!
